Mrs. Micah: Finance for a Freelance Life

About

I’m a 22, a recent college grad who just got married this summer. Along with getting a brilliant and loving husband, I acquired $100,000+ in student loan debt (which he acquired for the 10 years of school in getting a PhD.) , $8,000 in car debt and $800 in credit card debt.My blog began as a place for me to start being responsible about spending, saving, and debt repayment. In the process, I discovered the personal finance blogging community who have been very supportive.

I was doing a temp-to-hire position as an administrative assistant/receptionist, but it just wasn’t the place for me. They offered me the job and I gave notice instead. The work wasn’t bad but the job overall was not somewhere I could see myself in another year. So my work there ended on December 1.

I’m in a part-time position working as a newborn screener and am just starting part-time at a local library. But this doesn’t take up all my time, so I’m looking for other exciting opportunities, including some freelance work and crafting. We’re using some of our savings to cushion the transition and we’ll see how it goes. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll contact the placement agency again.

Currently, we have paid off the entire credit card debt and have a repayment plan which should allow us to save money and pay off debt at more than the minimums. (This plan is in a bit of jeopardy, depending on how my job change turns out.) I could use lots of thoughts, prayers, and encouragement, but I’m also happy that Mr. Micah and I are learning financial accountability so young instead of retiring with debt and no savings.

I’ve known plenty of good people who just didn’t know how to do it or couldn’t find a way, and it seems like a scary place to be (or they had the whole pension system change on them). My own parents were in their late 40s before they really began saving, but then they shared about their decisions and taught us about some valuable lessons–I also had the good fortune to take a personal finance class in my senior year and to discover some stellar bloggers from whom I’m still learning.

Thanks for taking the time to join us on our journey.

Have you considered PayPerPost, Smorty or LoudLaunch? I’d recommend PayPerPost.

Nice blog and I was interested in your migration to your own domain.

    Some questions:

    1. When you got your own domain name (ie without wordpress or blogpost in the address)- did you get a hosting service? If so, can you recommend who?

Hi Mrs. Micah, just started reading your blog, and I love it!

You seemed alot more mature than 22… I’m 22 right now and sometimes I honestly just feel like a kid.

Check out my blog if you have a chance - best of luck with whittling down your debt!
